Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer affects approximately 30,000 people a year. The effects can be devastating and can often even cause death. Prevention is key but early detection can also save the lives of many.

There are known risk factors which contribute to the incidence of oral cancer. They include:

  1. Tobacco
  2. Alcohol
  3. Sun exposure(in the lip area)
  4. A previous history of cancer in the head and neck area

Symptoms can include:

  1. White or red patches inside the mouth or on the lips
  2. Bleeding
  3. Loose teeth
  4. Pain or difficult swallowing
  5. An earache
  6. A sore that will not heal on it's own
  7. Difficulty wearing a denture

Not everyone experiences symptoms so it is essential to be screened for cancer by a dentist at least yearly even if you wear dentures. At our office these screening are done along with every initial and check-up exam.
